What does the future hold for a forgotten Manchester City midfielder?
Maria Lysaker-USA TODAY Sports

What does the future hold for forgotten Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips? The England international spent the second half of this season on loan at West Ham. After failing to make an impression at the world champions, Phillips secured a long move to the Hammers late in the January transfer window. But he failed to make a significant impact for David Moyes side. What the future holds for Phillips is anyone’s guess with the summer transfer window looming on the horizon.

Dan Sheldon and Sam Lee have reported for the Athletic that the season of Kalvin Phillips is likely over due to an undisclosed injury. They further report that it is unknown at this stage if the England international will return to Manchester City for treatment on the injury or stay at West Ham. Given that West Ham’s season is nearly over a return to the Etihad, it does appear the most likely option.

Following his unsuccessful loan spell at West Ham, it is hard to see a road back to Manchester City for Kalvin Phillips. He rarely featured for the world champions during his spell at the club. He made 31 appearances for the champions after his arrival at the club in July of 2022. A combination of injuries and poor form hampered the chances of the England international making an impact at Manchester City.

The loan move of Phillips to West Ham was made with the objective of giving him more first team opportunities. But the forgotten Manchester City midfielder only made 10 appearances for David Moyes side. He failed to impress during his loan spell in London, which means it may be hard for Manchester City to sell Phillips this summer.

Another loan move may beckon for the England international. It is hard to see any club paying the fee that Manchester City would demand for Phillips this summer. Perhaps another loan move may be what is needed for Kalvin Phillips to resurrect his career after a tough two seasons for the midfielder. It is hard to see a way back to Manchester City for Kalvin Phillips. A sale of the England international would appear to be the ideal scenario for all parties. But that appears unlikely given the way Phillips performed at West Ham.
