Playing for Pep Guardiola is something that many of the world’s best footballers have said they desire. The Spaniard’s tactical genius can help mould players of any age into superstars for Manchester City and his previous clubs. One of the downsides of playing for him is that everyone wants to do it. If a player does not stand out, they could end up on the transfer list, which according to Fabrizio Romano has happened to a veteran midfielder.

The Italian journalist reported Monday morning that “Juventus have now opened talks with Manchester City to discuss Kalvin Phillips deal.” An eight-year veteran with Leeds United in both the Championship and the Premier League, the 28-year-old defensive midfielder has seen his playing time limited under Guardiola this season.
Romano stated that Phillips was “open to the move.” Juventus want a loan deal with an option to buy. City would desire a mandatory buy option for the 2018/19 Championship Team of the Year member. The two domestic and European giants will continue their discussions as the January transfer window approaches, with Romano reporting, “Talks on.”
Following promotion with Leeds to the Premier League in 2020, Phillips would stay at Elland Road for two campaigns before joining the Citizens in the summer of 2022. Injuries immediately hampered the midfielder’s time under Guardiola. Eventually, the Englishman would lose his role as a preferred substitute, and be limited to only 12 Premier League appearances.
2023 has not been any kinder to Phillips. Guardiola has utilized other players over the 28-year-old. He has appeared in only four matches in the English top flight, something that would push anyone out of a team. Described as a “talented” player, he may be on his way to Turin to secure some coveted playing time.
