Massive Update on Joel Embiid’s Injury Return, Revealed
Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

In the race to secure playoff positions during the NBA’s home stretch, the Eastern Conference is abuzz with speculation about Joel Embiid‘s comeback. The Philadelphia 76ers and their fans await news on whether the towering 7-footer will return before the playoffs begin.

Sixers coach Nick Nurse provided a glimpse of optimism, stating before their game against the LA Clippers,

“I think there is a very good likelihood that he will return before the Play-In/Playoff,” Nurse said. “He’s out there working. He’s doing lots of skill work and things like that and just trying to continue to advance all that stuff.”

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Sixers are optimistic about Embiid’s ability to play a few regular-season games after returning from injury.

“I’m told it is not a question of if but when,” Wojnarowski said. “The belief is, with nine regular-season games left … that Joel Embiid can be back for a handful of those before the playoffs.”

Embiid, sidelined since January due to knee surgery, was on a trajectory for his second consecutive MVP award before his injury. He boasted an impressive average of 35 points and 11 rebounds per game. His last performance ended a remarkable run of 22 consecutive games, scoring 30 points or more, placing him in the elite company of James Harden and Wilt Chamberlain.

Despite the lack of a fixed return date, Embiid’s intentions are clear. “That’s the plan,” he confirmed a month ago, emphasizing the need for a smooth recovery.

Embiid’s potential return is set to disrupt the Eastern Conference standings. Before his injury, the 76ers were contenders for the second seed but have since dropped to the eighth spot. Embiid’s presence in the lineup could transform the Sixers into one of the most formidable lower seeds in NBA history.

The 76ers front office has remained optimistic about Embiid’s return, enhancing the team with key additions like Buddy Hield and Cam Payne. With Tyrese Maxey‘s rise this season, Embiid’s comeback could position Philadelphia as a serious contender in the Eastern Conference playoffs.
